10P English: 'The Man He Killed' & 'Men in Green'

'The Man He Killed'

1. The poem 'The Man He Killed' was written in 1902. The poem specifically addresses the Boer War, which Hardy was vehemently against.

2.The aspect of war that this poem is explores the relationship between two soldiers from different countries in battle. When the soldiers are fighting in war they are told who to shoot and who the enemy is. The soldiers aware told that they are the enemy and they must kill them, even though the soldier doesn't know what they are fighting for. They have no problem with the other team but they are brainwashed into thinking that the other team is the enemy. The poem then goes on to tell you that if you had met any of these people in different situation things could have been different and they could have been mates instead of enemies.

3. The tone/feelings and emotions play an important part in the poem because they help convey the message. In the poem the emotion and feeling is regret, sorrow and confusion. The emotion of regret and sorrow is displayed because it shows how war is sad and that he had no choice but to shoot the man because it was his life was at risk. The feeling of confusion is displayed when the poem says, 'I shot him dead because-- Because he was my foe,' This shows that he didn't really know why he shot him other then the reason that he was told to.

4. The three poetic techniques used in the poem are repitition, rhyme and alliteration. The use of repitition is used in the line, 'I shot him dead because-- Because he was my foe,' and in the start of the fifth stanza with the words 'yes, you and you'd.' Rhythm is used in the poem for example 'face and place,' and 'perhaps and traps.' Lastly, alliteration is used in the last line when it says the words 'help' and 'half' and the phrase, 'half-a-crown.' The techniques are effective because they convey the message and help give meaning and feeling to the way the soldiers feels at war.

'Men in Green'

1. The poem 'Men in Green' was written in 1944. The poem specifically addresses World War II.

2. The aspect of war in this poem explores how hard war can be. The poem shows you the hardships and struggle soldiers face on a day to day basis. The poem at first tells you how the soldiers had no idea what they had gotten into and how they realise that war is not just a holiday that is something so much worse.

3. The tone/feelings and emotions displayed in the poem are fear of death, horror, shock and scared. These four emotions and feeling are displayed throughout the whole poem. The soldiers are constantly horrified by their surroundings and the obstacles that they have to face.

4. The three poetic techniques in the poem are personification, rhythm and alliteration. Personification is used in the lines, 'till the ripped jungle underneath,' and 'where two white paws of cloud.' Rhyme is used in the poem in the phrases, 'gazed and raised,' and 'lie and eye. Lastly, alliteration was used a lot throughout the poem for example, 'hundred hissing.' These techniques are effective because they help convey the message of how hard and sad war can truly be.

I believe the poem 'The Man He Killed' is much more effective then the poem 'Men in Green.' i believe this because the poem 'The Man he Killed' describes a soldiers day at war and the hardship he faces. Whilst the poem "Men in Green' simply describes how war works and the things that happen. In the poem "The Man He Killed' the phrases 'I shot him dead because-- Because he was my foe,' and 'You shoot a fellow down, You'd treat, if met where any bar is,' are good examples to support my decision of why the poem 'The Man He Killed' is more effective. These are good examples because it tells you that if the soldiers weren't on the battle field and met in a bar they could have become good friends but because they were from different countries and on the battlefield they were told to shot each other. The poem 'Men in Green' displayed a completely different message that is not as strong. It simply tells you how 15 men come to war and 15 men die at war. It does not go into the emotions that the poem 'The Man He Killed does. Therefore, the poem 'The Man He Killed' is much more effective because of the message it conveys.

Childhood Memory

One of my favourite childhood memories was camping at my farm with my family and relitives. It was my favourite memory because we had so much fun that we hardly slept because we were talking all night and playing in the hay bayles. I am lucky to have a loving family and to spend time with my relitives becuase i know some people don't get that oppitunity. One year my family did not go camping, that year I felt strange almost empty. But the next year we went camping and it was better then ever. I am very lucky and those memories I have will last forever.

Chapter 4 Questions

1. Mrs Mossop reminds Joseph of a bird. Why? How does this image change as she talks with his Mother?
Mrs Mossop reminds Joseph of a bird because she always has an opinion towards everyones lifes and puts her ‘beak’ into other peoples business, and with her formal clothing and thin upright posture. This changes his image when Mrs Mossop and his mother are talking to each other.


2. What causes Joseph to change his mind and tell his mother and Mrs Mossop that he would 'probably' draw Tom Leyton?
Joseph wanted to prove to Mrs Mossop and his mother that he could draw Tom Leyton. He wanted to show that he wasn't scared and to show that he wasn't just a silly little boy.


3. What feelings and memories does the mango tree arouse in Joseph?

The mango tree brings back a lot of memories because it was Jospehs hiding place. It was the place where he felt safe and he could really think about his problems. One of his memories of the mango tree was looking over the top of the tree and seeing the whole town.


4. What effect does the final incident in this chapter create? How has language been used to achieve this?
The incident at the end of this chapter was when the branch of the tree breaks and Joseph drops and injures himself. The language during this event helps to create the effect. It was very effective becuase it used descriptive language. The language exaggerated the text.

How does the idea of "evolving from a cocoon" relate to any event in your life?
The day I was born was the day was when i 'evolved from a cocoon.' To my parents I brought a new life and a new miricle. To my siblings I brought an annoying but lovable personality and friend.To my friends now I brought fun and laughter. To my peers I brought a new personality. To my teachers I brought hard work and effort. My life brought much laughter and sadness, I was a new creation of God and I evolved into the world.

Dreams

Do you have dreams? Do you have recurring dreams? Discuss the idea of symbols in dreams?
I do not remember dreams I had when little but I do remember more recent dreams. I do have recurring dreams sometimes and when I do I remember the dream very clearly. I usually only have a recurring dream for a short period of time. There are many symbols in dreams, these include little things like a flower and a candle which both can represent life. There are also many other symbols. I like having dreams because they can take you on adventures and show you knew things.

1. Why do you think Joseph's childhood nightmare of the Running Man returns?
I believe Joseph's nightmare about the Running Man returns because when Joseph was little he was scared to go near or even see the Running Man and now the Running Man was so close to him; his brain remembers his past feeling towards the Running Man.


2. What does Joseph decide at the end of the chapter? Why?
At the end of the chapter Joseph decides that he never draw a portrait of Tom Leyton because of how scary he finds him. He never wanted to see Tom Leyton again because of what Mrs Mossop says about him. Mrs Mossop always said that Tom Leyton was a sick man and that he was very dangerous. Joseph started to believe every word of this.
